In honor of Native American heritage month in November, I had my class do a project based learning activity on the Sioux tribe. The reason I picked the Sioux tribe is because, being from the Midwest, I hold a special place in my heart for this tribe. Students were expected to use reading strategies to find the main idea of the four categories, food, shelter, village life, and family life of the Sioux tribe. Then with their knowledge they had to create a "Show what you know" project with a presentation. We displayed our gallery for all the other 2nd grade classes to come in, visit and learn about the tribe, and we also had our parents come in to see all of our hard work. It was a fun way to honor and learn more about Native Americans and to reinforce high expectations as well as reading/research strategies.
