I love celebrating different heritage months, and this one is especially close to my heart. We have a very large Hispanic population, so today marked the day to Celebrate Cinco de Mayo! My kiddos were encouraged to wear their authentic Mexican attire, and/or red, white and green. We created an academic day surrounding their culture and this celebration. We created projects from the flag of Mexico, an Aztec mask by coloring the Spanish words, a comprehension activity using evidence from the text to answer questions about Cinco de Mayo, and to top it all off, we made our own guacamole! We also created a flow map of the steps to make guacamole as we ate it. It was an awesome day! I learned a lot from them as well! Ole!
Just ONE week isn't enough to say "You are appreciated!" I can't put my appreciation for teachers into words. Just saying "thank you" to all those amazing teachers out there isn't enough! You are all superheroes in my mind! Teachers have a special heart, and the lives they touch to make a difference every day is breathtaking. So, thank you to all of you out there that have sleepless nights, unpaid overtime with little or no complaints, who take that extra mile to help a student and who have chosen this career for all the right reasons.. to make a difference in a child's life. So this week, and always, THANK YOU!! You are AMAZING!!!!!!!!!
"Hey Hey! Ho Ho! Those Bully's Gotta Go!" Every year our school participates in "Stand 4 Change!" This is a movement to raise bullying awareness and to help "Stop Bullying NOW!" Every one wears red and each grade level, specialists, support staff and administrators make their way out to the field to form a big heart and recite an anti-bullying pledge, talk about the S.T.A.R. strategy to deal with bullies and have a fun cheer to shout. This year it was "Hey Hey! Ho Ho! Those Bullies Gotta Go!" We even had pom poms this year! I love this because I always strive to create a "bully free zone" classroom and want kids to become valued, stand up citizens. We spent the day talking about bullying, strategies to deal with bullies, class building activities and making books and posters to promote "Stand 4 Change". It was a great way to end a week! STOP BULLYING NOW! :)
